Overview
This STAC-accredited course offers both theoretical and clinical training in conscious sedation using intravenous techniques, adhering to the latest guidelines set by the Intercollegiate Advisory Committee for Sedation in Dentistry. The programme is delivered by experienced clinicians with extensive expertise in dental sedation. Participants will complete a minimum of 20 supervised intravenous sedation cases and develop a comprehensive portfolio of practical experience.
Aims and objectives
This course will provide the necessary theoretical knowledge for the safe use of intravenous conscious sedation for dentistry:
- Pharmacology, physiology and anatomy
- Indications/contraindications
- Patient assessment and treatment planning
- Management of complications
- Standards, guidelines and training
The course will also provide supervised clinical experience in the use of intravenous sedation using midazolam.
Format
Training will be provided over 10 days by the Department of Sedation and Special Care Dentistry at Guy’s Hospital and will comprise of:
- Day 1–2: Knowledge and Clinical Skills Update
- Days 3–10: Fully supervised hands-on patient treatment sessions
A knowledge and skills assessment will be mandatory for progression towards independent intravenous sedation practice.
Who should attend
This course is suitable for dentists based in both primary and secondary care settings who wish to develop their knowledge and skills of intravenous sedation.
Attendees should:
- Possess full GDC Dentist registration
- Have at least three years post graduate experience
- Have the ability to carry out routine restorative and oral surgery procedures with confidence
- Be working in an environment which is suitable for the practice of conscious sedation
- Meet all necessary pre-work checks including occupational health clearance with evidence of MMR vaccinations and DBS from within past two years

Following the interview, the Course Directors and events team will notify you of the outcome.
